06.Sep.2010 What a thrill on the hill.Don’t knock the feeling of a home win!!!
THERE are good times and there are very good times. Then there was this weekend.
I thought winning my first British GT race was pretty cool. I reckoned I would be lucky to beat that feeling this year.
But two class wins and two top-six finishes overall in the Porsche Carrera Cup…at Knockhill…in the sun…in front of all my family and friends.
What an awesome feeling. I have to say a big thanks to Tommy Dreelan and Celtic Speed for giving me such a brilliant car.
But if you had told me I would have pulled off the results I did I would have suggested you?d had too many Irn-Brus.
It was such a tough field. The pace was incredible and it was really hard work. But the car was great through qualifying. That was when I first thought I could manage something pretty special.
Michael Caine and Tim Harvey have made the Carrera Cup their own this season and it is easy to see why. The pace and control they have is amazing. But I can still give them some tips on how to overtake at the Hairpin ? for a small fee!
In the first race I was worried about the start. I felt I needed to get away well and I got a great start.
I kept my position and bedded in. I tried to stick with the guys in front and, once I realised I could cope with that pace, I made a move.
I maybe could have got fourth, but fifth was a great result for me and Celtic Speed.
Then in race two I got another good start. I made up a couple of places on the first lap. But there was radiator coolant on the track on the third lap. It almost put four or five of us off.
But fair play to the marshals who were brilliant. They do a great job throughout the year, and they kept the action going at the weekend.
The safety car seemed to go on forever, but I finally reeled a couple of guys in and clinched a top-six place.
It was an amazing feeling to be stood on the podium at my home track. I can?t wait to do it again…and again…and again.
It would be great to do a season in the Porsche. I reckon I could do a serious job. Hopefully one of the team bosses noticed how it all went.
Apart from my efforts, it was great to see the Saltire flying proudly. Gordon Shedden was in great form with a win and a second place in the touring cars. Jonny Adam had a drive in the Ginettas and won. Another big up for the Knockhill instructors!
And Dave Newsham continued his amazing run in the Renault Clios. It was great to see him win the championship in Scotland.
I admit I have relived my races so many times in my head. I bet Dave is reliving his whole season. Here?s hoping we get that winning feeling again soon.
