About Me

RORY BUTCHER ? remember the name. Because this is one racer coming to a track near you.
I have been hooked on the sport since I was about six when I watched my brother Jamie race karts.
Then, when I was 11, I noticed the legend that is Valentino Rossi ? a bike racer with tons of talent, personality…and a string of good-looking girls following him in the paddock.
That was it, I knew a motor racing career was for me.
My first target had to be to beat my sister Gillian. The brother-in-law ? BTCC ace Gordon Shedden ? is pretty quick too.
But after two titles in 2009 and a season where I was on the pace in every car I drove, I am hoping this is the start of my time.
This is where the ambition turns into reality.
It may be my name on the result sheet, but there are a lot of people who work their … hard..to get me those pole positions and podiums.
They all volunteer and they know who they are and how thankful I am because I couldn?t do it all without them.
I chill out with my Yamaha R6 on track days ? it must be the speed freak in me. But I can actually lap Knockhill quicker on my bike than I have done in a Van Diemen. So I guess I still have some work to do!
I started in bike racing, at just 14, in the Scottish Aprilia 125 Superteen championship. Within four years I had moved on to four wheels and the Scottish XR2s.
In my first race I qualified in third place, and won two races that season. I had the bug big-time and the fledgling racer was already thinking about lapping at Le Mans.
But the hard work was just beginning, a mixture of bad luck and mistakes ? yeah, I admit it ? cost me in the Scottish Mini Cooper Cup in 2005, despite getting a number of poles and podiums.
However it was the decision to tackle single-seaters that proved the smart move. In two years I have won 25 Formula Ford races. Le Mans legend and SMRC president Allan McNish claims I am the fastest Formula Ford driver around at the moment ? and I didn?t have to pay him to say it!
2008 also provided a glimpse of the future. A guest appearance in the Porsche Carrera Cup saw a fifth-place finish in both races ? just two-tenths of a second behind eventual champ Tim Harvey in race one.
I just missed out on Formula Ford title glory in 2008, so spent the winter rebuilding the car myself. I was determined that 2009 was going to be the year when I made an impression across Britain. It meant towing the car from Brand Hatch to Croft on long, dark nights.
But that work paid off as I dominated the Scottish season on the way to the championship. I had the most wins in the UK championship, but lost the title on a technicality. But the highlight was winning the Brands Hatch Formula Ford Festival. What a week! What a buzz!
I was also dubbed favourite at the Walter Hayes meeting at Silverstone, and was doing pretty well until a competitor went over the top of me. If you saw the pictures in The Scottish Sun, you?ll know what I mean. That?s how the Butch Crashidy nickname started.
But I capped off a dream season by winning the Ecurie Ecosse Hub Cap at the SMRC awards night in Edinburgh ? although making that speech was harder than any win.
Away from the track, I play football, badminton, cycle, and actually enjoy those gym sessions.
Sorry SuBo, but I have a dream. I want to be in either FIA GTs or the Le Mans Series. I want to race ? and win ? at Le Mans. And I promise when I get on that podium, there will be no Susan Boyle shimmy as I spray that champagne.
People may ask what the Plan B is. The answer is simple: There is no Plan B. Le Mans is on the horizon and I will get there.
